One of the downsides to messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger is that people can see when you’re online, so they expect an immediate response when they contact you. To hide yourself when you’re using the web-based version of WhatsApp (web.whatsapp.com), install the smartly named ShutApp (mzl.la/1mtjtrL). This add-on shows your status as ‘unavailable’ and doesn’t mark messages you open as ‘read’, effectively making you invisible to other WhatsApp users. The advantage of this ‘private mode’ is that you can choose who you chat to and don’t feel obliged to reply to needy demands. Messages will also show as unread on your synced mobile device.
